The story of off-white, a luxury street wear pioneer

One of the most iconic street wear fashion brands of all time is Off-White. It succeeded in pioneering the luxury street wear market within a short period of time and gained worldwide recognition. With its name, it evokes the union of contrast between black and white, a palette very prevalent in its creations.

Virgil abloh’s story before off-white

On September 30, 1980, Off-White’s future founder was born in Rockford. Both his parents were immigrants from Ghana, and his mother was a seamstress. His first fashion lessons were taught by her.

Virgil was passionate about art and sports, street culture, skateboarding, and graffiti. To fulfill his father’s dream of having an engineer son, the young man chose to go to Civil Engineering College despite his creative mind. In addition to his degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he earned a master’s degree in architecture from the Illinois Institute of Technology.

Virgil and Kanye: A fashion friendship

It was in Chicago in 2002 that Virgil and Kanye first met. He was already a well-known rapper, but he had not yet expanded his empire beyond music. In 2009, they both interned at Fendi, which expanded their relationship and their knowledge of fashion.

The art direction and fashion advice of Virgil have always been a part of their friendship.

Paris fashion week 2009

The creative team traveled to Paris during Paris Fashion Week to align Kanye’s partnership with Louis Vuitton. The infamous Comme des Garçons group photo was taken outside the show.

The futuristic design divided opinions but sparked a new luxury market opportunity. According to Tommy Ton to VOGUE, “This was before the street style became such a phenomenon, and you could really see how much Kanye loved fashion and clothes.”

In addition to merchandising and tour stages, Abloh also designed the album’s graphic material. Abloh designed the Grammy-winning artwork for West and Jay-Z’s watch the Throne album while in this position.

A controversial pyrex

The debut collection of Pyrex Vision featured plaid flannel shirts and was Abloh’s first test in the fashion market.

He made the clothing out of deadstock Ralph Lauren flannel shirts that he bought for $40 each. The flannels were resold for $550 each after they were screen printed with “Pyrex” and the number 23 – a reference to Michael Jordan.

The off-white area is between black and white

Off-White was founded in 2013 by Virgil Abloh as a space for his continuous experimentation. In his speech, he spoke directly to young customers and fans fascinated by contemporary art, street wear, and luxury.

Despite his focus on fashion, he combined ideas of street wear, luxury, art, music, and architecture. The visionary approach Virgil takes to the medium of fashion remains iconoclastic, profoundly conceptual, and accessible to a wide global audience.”

Collaborations

Virgil Abloh reinvented the Air Max, Air Jordan, Blazer, and VaporMax sneakers for The Ten project. As well as Nike, the designer collaborated with the following brands: Levi’s, Rimowa, Mc Donald’s, Jimmy Choo, Moncler, IKEA, Browns, SSENSE, Warby Parker, Sunglass Hut, Évian, Champion, Converse, Barneys New York, Dr. Martens, Umbro, Takashi Murakami, Timberland, Heron Preston, Byredo, ASAP Rocky, Boys Noize, Asspizza, Le Bon Marché, Kerwin Fros, The Ballet Composer’s Holiday.

LVMH acquired 60% off Off-White in July 2021, with founder Virgil Abloh holding the remaining 40%. Virgil was promoted to a senior position within LVMH, making him the group’s most powerful black executive.

In the end, Abloh’s trajectory came to an end and the world received the news no one had expected.

Legacy of Virgil abloh

Rare cancer called cardiac angiosarcoma caused the 41-year-old designer to die last November in Chicago.

The legacy of Virgil Alboh lives on. For a younger generation of black fashion lovers, he broke down barriers that prevented them from belonging to the industry.

Off-White’s first line, “The Youth Always Win,” was named after Virgil’s belief in the young.

The fund, which has an initial value of $1 million, was launched by Abloh in 2020. By providing scholarships to Black, African-American, or African-descent students of academic promise, the Virgil AblohTM Post-Modern Scholarship Fund fosters equity and inclusion within the fashion industry.

Six months after his death, Off-White named Ib Kamara its new image and art director. As a stylist from Sierra Leone, he worked closely with Abloh. Both Off-White presentations and Louis Vuitton menswear collections featured their works.

What is the reason for the high price of Off-White?

The brand’s understanding doesn’t fully answer the question, ‘Why is Off-White’s merchandise expensive?’ Here are some reasons why Off-White’s merchandise is expensive but continues to sell well.

1. The fashion brand Off-White appeals to a young audience

There is no doubt that this is one of the hottest street wear brands in the world. In just a year, Off-White climbed 33 places on Lyst’s quarterly report. For the first time, the brand surpassed fashion houses like Gucci and Balenciaga. It’s not a publicly traded company. Due to this, it’s difficult to estimate its revenue. In today’s world, street wear is luxury, and it promotes high-end fashion. As millennials and Gen Z take over the fashion industry, customers are getting younger.

Off-White’s creativity comes from combining wealth and accessibility. According to Abloh, the brand’s goal is to attract customers as young as 12. In addition, the brand benefits from emerging trends in American music such as hip-hop. This is a trend that he capitalizes on faster than other brands. The young generation is constantly shaped by the merchandise Abloh produces, and he understands the modern world better than anyone else.

2. Designing with stylistic individuality

The stylistic individuality of Off-White’s designs is one of the reasons it is so expensive. By using this approach to expression, consumers are able to showcase their personalities through their clothes. Abloh is aware that people choose the fashion they wear based on their choices.

As the younger generation continues to define their identity, providing merchandise that represents them is crucial. In order to succeed in marketing its products, it delivers street wear off-white men’s hoodie products that allow its clients to customize their own look. Rather than focusing on perceptions, the brand focuses on who you are and what you stand for.

How big are Off-White hoodies?

Off-White clothing and footwear tend to fit true to size, so take your usual size. In keeping with a classic street wear aesthetic, Off-White’s fit is intended to be loose and baggy. Smaller sizes will fit you better if you prefer a tighter fit.

Is Off-White’s hoodie unisex?

Off-White stores worldwide sell the unisex collection for $95-170, which includes four graphic T-shirts and four hoodies.
